Long Range Plan

Art Displays

          Pocatello Arts Council

The Arts Council has generously provided a wonderful selection of original artwork on permanent loan to the Marshall Public Library.  The artwork is located on the second floor and includes a spectacular variety of work by local, national, and international artists. The Library is dedicated to providing an outlet for the display of Art in the community and we gratefully thank the Arts Council for the wonderful addition of these pieces to our building.  In addition to the paintings, the library also displays photography, drawings, school projects, and other unique displays by local artists and students throughout the year.

Stained Glass at the Library

Two original stained glass creations by Pocatello artist Judy Cantrill now grace the entrance of the Marshall Public Library. The glass works are mounted above the East and West entrances to the library.

The glass on the West side is a donation to the library from the artist. The glass over the East entrance doors was funded by the Spaulding Foundation as part of several enhancements to the beauty and function of the library's entrance. The foundation is also funding decoration for the entrance area walls and floor. In addition, the Spaulding Foundation has purchased attractive and functional shelving for periodicals and a display unit for children's audiovisual materials.

Judy Cantrill has created glass work for Portneuf Medical Center, the ISU Credit Union, and many other Pocatello locations. She was also responsible for restoring the stained glass in the Brady Chapel. The library's glass work marks the first time that Cantrill has combined "hot glass" with flat glass. Hot glass is glass which is molded into three dimensions.

Judy was also the creator of  "Lady and the Tramp" - a glass mural that hangs in a window of the library's first floor children's area.

Sculpture Outside the West Entrance

This sculpture, sponsored by the Pocatello Youth Forum, was designed and made by local artist Dennis Proksa.

This coverlet was donated to the Marshall Public Library by the League of Women Voters of Pocatello.

 "TeleCirc" (Electronic Notification System)

What is TeleCirc?

The library's Electronic Notification System (TeleCirc) is an automated system that dials a number and plays a recorded message. TeleCirc calls patrons when library materials are overdue. TeleCirc also makes calls to people who have reserved library materials which have become available.

When does it call?

TeleCirc is set up to call 2-7 days after library materials are due.  For "holds", calls are made the first and third days after the material is available (the second call is not made if the material is picked up). Calls are made between 9 am and 8 pm, and no calls are made on Sundays.

Why doesn't the message include the titles, or even who checked the materials out?

TeleCirc only picks up the telephone numbers to call, not the titles of the material overdue or on hold.  You can always call the library and ask for more information when you receive a TeleCirc call (232-1263).

Why did I get a Telecirc call in the evening, after I returned my books in the afternoon?

TeleCirc selects phone numbers to call the first thing in the morning, and uses that list all day. The list of phone numbers is not updated until the next day.

Why is there a pause at the beginning of the message? Why is the message repeated?

TheTeleCirc message is from a computer, which waits to be sure the telephone has been "picked up".  The message is repeated to increase the chances that it will be recorded on the machine.

If your telephone number is "voice mail" or requires an extension number, TeleCirc won't work. It cannot understand the options or press extra numbers.

There are other choices for notification of overdue materials or materials on hold, including U.S. Postal Service and e-mail. These options will probably reduce the number of notices you receive. Ask a librarian if you are interested.

Exhibits & Events

Several events are scheduled throughout the year and the Library plays an active role in providing the           best of what the community has to offer.  Besides featuring speakers on a diverse range of interest to           the community, the Marshall Library offers unique programming that continues to grow in popularity.            Such programming includes "Music at the Library", featuring performances by local, national, and
international artists; "Drama at the Library", which offers local talent a venue for performing the
dramatic arts in a very unique setting. Exhibits provide educational, historical, and regional learning
opportunities to the general public.

Friends of the Marshall Public Library
The Friends of the Marshall Public Library is a non-profit volunteer group that believes in the importance of books and cultural activities for people of all ages. Its primary goal is to enrich the educational and financial resources of the Marshall Public Library through volunteer participation. Since August 1995, we have conducted book sales, donated books to several local service organizations, purchased a story hour room clock, purchased strollers for library patron usage, and provided matching grant money for a story hour book collection. Plans are being made to start a "yellow shelf" community outreach program to make books more accessible in public places.

Board Members: Eliza Schmidt - President, Chris Tatham - Vice President, Kellie Woodhouse - Treasurer, Lisa Christon - Secretary; (at large): Julie Allen, Marti Burnquist, Nancy Hooper, Emily Johnson, Donna Lassere, Nancy Mann-Blair.

The Friends of the Marshall Public Library are looking for new members. If you are interested, please come into the library and inquire at the circulation desk.

Membership Levels:  Individual - $5.00, Family - $10.00, Senior - $3.00, Sponsor - $50.00,
